March, water at nine degrees, a rocky bank sloping gently toward the channel. The round crank you have been running for an hour is giving you nothing, and yet you know the fish are there, sitting on the slope. That is the textbook situation for a flat-sided crankbait: less water pushed, more flash, a signature that slow fish accept when a round body makes them leave. The OG Slim 06, out of Ott DeFoe's garage at Rapala, is cut for exactly that.

Why a flat body does not swim like a round one

Rapala states a flat-sided build that produces a medium wobble and a tight side-to-side action. Both words matter. A round body shoves a lot of water and rolls wide, which is excellent for alerting an active fish from a distance. A flat body displaces less water but reflects light across the full height of its flank on every oscillation. The signal is no longer a battering ram, it is a flicker.

In practice that changes where you use it. In cold water, a fish unwilling to chase will often refuse a wide-swimming crank, yet it will rise to a lure that flickers past within reach. It is the same reasoning that gets a Bomber Next Gen Flat A or a 6th Sense Crush Flat 75X tied on when the thermometer drops.

Balsa adds its share. As on the Rapala Shad Rap, the wooden body gives clear buoyancy and a fast rise on the pause, which lets you work hard bottom without burying the lure in it. That is no small detail on a late-winter rock bank, where bottom contact produces half the bites.

The lip: thin, light, circuit board

Rapala stresses an extremely thin and lightweight circuit board lip which, according to the brand, delivers the right action however you fish it. On the product photo you can see a slim, white, translucent blade of rounded outline, set under the nose with the line tie ring riding on top of it.

A thin lip has two measurable effects. It opposes less inertia at the start, so the lure begins swimming almost immediately after it lands, even at a very slow speed — which is precisely what cold water asks for. And it weighs little, so it does not unbalance an already light wooden body: the attitude stays stable without loading the front end.

The numbers, and what they say about the lure

The manufacturer table fits on one line: 2-3/4 inches, that is 7 cm, for half an ounce, about 14.2 g, with a stated running depth of 6 ft, around 1.8 m. The 06 in the name therefore points to that depth in feet, not to a length.

Fourteen grams on a 7 cm body is a high density for balsa. Internal ballast explains it, and it has a direct consequence: the bait casts well, which is not a given on a flat wooden body, naturally wind-sensitive because of its large side surface.

Rapala states VMC black nickel 1x strong hybrid trebles without giving a count for this model. The photo shows two anchor points, belly and tail, but the lure is pictured there with no hooks at all: both hangers are empty, which is not the state it comes out of the pack in.

Rigging

Fluorocarbon in the 10 to 14 lb range, with a snap or a loop knot. A knot cinched onto the split ring chokes the lip and flattens the action, and on a flat sided bait the effect is even more visible than on a round crank because the whole action rests on a modest amplitude. Moderate-action rod, drag set soft: a floating balsa body plus trebles means pulled hooks if you fish it stiff.

In cold water, do not try to make this bait bang like a squarebill. Reel just fast enough to feel the lip brush the rocks now and then, then stop dead for a second. The slow, near-vertical rise of balsa is what the fish comes for, not the impact.

The classic mistake

Treating the Slim 06 like a summer search bait. Its profile does not push enough water to alert a fish scattered across a big flat, and you will fish right past them trying to cover ground. This is a precision bait for a zone you have already identified: a slope, a rock pile, a channel edge. For covering water, a round body like the Rapala DT6 stays clearly more efficient.

The other mistake is speed. Plenty of anglers speed up when nothing bites. On a flat sided bait, speeding up shrinks an already tight amplitude and the lure ends up climbing in the water column without touching the useful zone any more. Slow down instead, and use cast length to win the last few centimetres of depth.

Colours by water clarity

Rapala runs the Slim 06 through its house palette, which changes from season to season: think in families of tones rather than catalogue references.

When to tie it on instead of another crank

The Slim 06 fills a precise slot: cold to temperate water, 1.5 to 2 m, hard bottom, fish that are not keen to chase. Beyond 2 m, or on active summer fish, a round-bodied diver does better. Closer to the bank and inside wood, the Rapala OG Rocco 5 is the right tool. The three sit happily in the same box.

Knowing which one to tie on starts with the spot, and that is exactly what CarnaFish does: one photo of the spot, and the AI suggests the zone, the depth and the type of lure that fit the conditions of the day. To tie all that back to a season and a fish behaviour, our season-by-season guide to predator fishing gives you the framework.

Key takeaways

FAQ

How deep does the OG Slim 06 run?

Rapala states 6 ft, about 1.8 m. That figure assumes a long cast and thin line; with thick fluorocarbon and a short cast, count on 1.3 to 1.5 m instead.

What is the difference with a round-bodied crankbait?

A flat body displaces less water but throws far more side flash. It alerts fish from a shorter distance, but it gets accepted more readily by a slow or wary fish, typically in cold water. A round body keeps the edge when you need to cover water fast.

Does the Slim 06 work for zander?

Yes, in the same register as a classic small balsa crankbait: slow retrieve along a rocky slope, light bottom contact, short pause. The 7 cm size matches the baitfish zander hunt in Europe.

Does the lure float?

Yes. Rapala states a premium balsa body, a material that gives clear buoyancy and a visible rise as soon as you stop reeling. That rise is what lifts it off the rocks without hanging up.

How many hooks come fitted?

Rapala lists VMC black nickel 1x strong hybrid trebles without giving a count for this model. The product photo shows two hook hangers, belly and tail, but the lure is photographed there with no hooks fitted.

Do I need a wire leader with this lure?

Only if you are fishing a spot that holds pike. On a bass or zander spot in clear water, a fluorocarbon leader stays more discreet and is plenty.
